Ireland Holiday 3 - Kilkenny

After a couple of days in Dublin we were heading south to stay with Fi's friend Kathleen in County Cork. First though we stopped off to visit the Dunmore Caves, north of Kilkenny, and then the city of Kilkenny itself.

The Dunmore Caves website states that admission is by guided tour only. However, when we arrived there was one tour underway and another one waiting for a large group of scouts that had pre-booked. We were offered the option of joining the scouts, or taking ourselves on a self guided tour. We chose to go it alone and were given a laminated guide with extensive details on the history of the caves and the formations that we could see. We were all quite happy with our self guided tour, and thought that it was a better experience than we would have had as part of a large group.

After the caves we went into Kilkenny itself for a little mooch around. I had hoped to pop into the Smithwicks brewery shop but unfortunately time got away from us. We had a wander along the Medieval Mile, looked around St Mary's Cathedral, the Kilkenny Castle grounds, and the National Craft Gallery - where several presents were bought. Highlight of the day was watching a pair of otters playing in the River Nore.

A beer free blog post! There was beer later in the day though.
